Not every jump in mentions qualifies as a spike worth your attention. The term is often used loosely to describe any increase in social chatter, but within data-driven monitoring, a spike has a more precise definition. An asset is spiking when its current social volume materially exceeds its own recent baseline, typically measured as a multiple of the rolling average over the prior seven to fourteen days.

The baseline is the critical ingredient. A token that normally attracts 200 daily mentions is spiking meaningfully at 600 mentions. It expresses current mention volume as a ratio relative to the baseline: a velocity of 1.0 means the asset is receiving exactly its typical level of attention; 2.0 means double; 0.5 means half. The direction and magnitude of this ratio tells you far more than the raw count ever could.

A token with a velocity of 2.8 is being discussed nearly three times as intensively as usual. For a trader monitoring a basket of assets, that reading immediately prioritises which token deserves investigation, regardless of whether its absolute mention count is large or small. Velocity creates a common language of abnormality across assets at every size tier.

One important nuance: velocity can spike negatively as well as positively. Coordinated shilling looks different in the data even when the mention count is similar. The accounts involved tend to share timing, phrasing, and sometimes explicit promotional language. The spread across platforms is narrower, concentrated on one or two where the campaign originated. Sentiment analysis of these spikes often shows an artificially uniform positivity that breaks from the typical distribution of community opinion.

News-event spikes are the most straightforward to identify. A regulatory announcement, exchange listing, large-wallet transaction, or major technical development generates a surge that is traceable to a single external cause. These spikes are usually sharp and relatively brief: the conversation is reactive rather than self-sustaining.

How to Filter Noise from Signal on a Spike Day

On a day when multiple assets are spiking simultaneously, the challenge is not identifying the spikes but distinguishing the ones worth acting on from the ones that will resolve without consequence. A few filters applied in sequence significantly narrow the field.

First, check whether the spike is accompanied by a mood score change in the same direction. A velocity surge without any corresponding improvement in mood suggests the increased volume is negative or neutral — people are talking more but not more positively. Mood and velocity moving together is a stronger signal than velocity alone.

Second, examine the sentiment component directly. Are the posts contributing to the spike broadly constructive, or are they driven by controversy, criticism, or risk-related concern? A controversy spike (where negative news has generated a large reaction) can look identical to an opportunity spike in raw volume data. Sentiment disaggregation separates the two.

Third, consider the asset's position in any relevant narrative. A spike in an asset whose narrative is simultaneously heating up has a structural tailwind that a standalone spike does not. A spike that arrives on a already-rising mood trend is more meaningful than one that appears against a flat or declining mood background. Finally, check the asset's narrative association. If the spiking token belongs to a narrative currently showing elevated heat, the spike has contextual support. If it sits in a cold or declining narrative, the spike is more likely to be an isolated event without lasting momentum.

Combining Spikes with Sentiment Score for Stronger Conviction

The most reliable signals emerge when velocity and sentiment confirm each other. Either metric on its own is suggestive; both moving in the same direction simultaneously is compelling.

A spike in social velocity accompanied by a sentiment score moving from, say, 55 toward 75 tells a coherent story: more people are talking, and those people are saying more positive things. That combination is what genuine organic pre-move buzz tends to look like in the data before the price chart registers it.

Conversely, a velocity spike with sentiment declining or staying flat deserves careful scrutiny. The volume might be driven by criticism, risk discussions, or coordinated promotion that is drawing backlash. Understanding why the spike is occurring (not just that it is occurring) is always the more important question.
